Dick and Felix Francis are unique among members of the Detection Club as a father and son whose thriller writing became a family business. Following a career as a famous steeplechase jockey, Dick published his first novel in 1962. Julian Symons, a stern judge, said in his history of the genre, Bloody Murder, that Dick’s ‘rare and enviable ability to drive a narrative along, combined with thoroughness of research in a given subject, are what makes readers keep wanting to turn the pages’.

H. R. F. Keating, who was elected to the Detection Club at the same time as Dick Francis, said in Writing Crime Fiction: ‘With all the sense of timing learnt as a champion jockey, he creates situation after situation of rising suspense to hold readers … glued to the battle of wits between hero and villains that he has devised.’ In the twenty-first century, Felix carries on the tradition, and is the ideal person to explain in more detail how these effects are achieved.
